Book excerpt: Every year, thousands of people pilgrimmage to South Bend, Indiana to visit the campus of the University of Notre Dame for sporting events, academic conferences, or just for a tour. From the Golden Dome on top of the main building, to the grotto hidden behind the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, to the mural of 'Touchdown Jesus' that covers the wall of the Hesburgh Library, the structures and architecture of the campus hold special meaning for these visitors. In Signs of Grace Father Nicholas Ayo, C.S.C., a Holy Cross priest and a professor in the Program of Liberal Studies at Notre Dame explores some of the places on the cmapus made famous by television and movies, such as 1993's 'Rudy.' But he also delves deep into the hidden or unknown areas of campus that even some students may never have seen. His thoughtful and spiritual musings are the perfect guide to a campus tour or just as a vivid picture of the spiritual place that is Notre Dame.

Download or read book The Work of the Holy Spirit written by Abraham Kuyper and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, originally published in English in 1900-it was translated by HENRI DE VRIES (1847-1932)-Abraham Kuyper addresses what he feels is a scarcely discussed topic among theologians and practicing Christians: the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Much had been written about Jesus and the Father, but he found very little about the Holy Spirit, whose job it is to sanctify the soul. Kuyper divides his work into three volumes. Volume One covers the work of the Holy Spirit in the Church; Volumes Two and Three cover the work of the Holy Spirit in the individual. Dutch theologian ABRAHAM KUYPER (1837?1920) was prime minister of the Netherlands from 1901 to 1905. He developed Neo-Calvinism, which emphasizes the sovereignty of Jesus over all mental pursuits and supports the idea that there exists a grace given by God to all things in order to sustain the continued unfolding of creation. Kuyper wrote a number of books including Conservatism and Orthodoxy (1870), The Social Question and the Christian Religion (1891), and Common Grace (1902).
Download or read book Mariology written by Rev. M.J. Scheeben and published by Lulu Press, Inc. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Matthias Scheeben was a nineteenth century theologian whose writing forged a new creative synthesis of the teaching of the Fathers and of the scholastics. Scheeben's work had a decisive influence on later Catholic theologians such as Hans Urs von Balthasar. His primary theme is the nuptial union of God and the created order through the Incarnation, a marriage of heaven and earth that begins in the conception of Christ in the womb of the virgin Mary. Mary, therefore, is the temple in which God and humankind are reconciled. This and all that flows from it and preceded it by way of preparation is the subject-matter of his work Mariology. He draws together the teaching on the Incarnation, on deification, on the Marian dogmas, sacramental theology, and ecclesiology in a truly beautiful work. Originally published in two volumes, the entire work is gathered here in a single volume for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For members of the Carthusian order, prayer is not just something that is done at certain times of day: it is in fact the vital respiration of their faith. This third volume of novice conferences gives us access once again to the Carthusians' profound wisdom, as we share the initiation of a group of young monks into the practice of prayer. Interior Prayer contains the Carthusians' traditional doctrine on prayer - from its very beginnings to the simplicity of its highest forms. Far from being abstract and theoretical, we learn about the prayer process by sharing in the novices' concrete spiritual journey. Their problems and difficulties, and the many pitfalls they encounter on the way, are expressed in an ongoing dialogue with their guide who relates to each one individually.

Download or read book Private Investigations written by Victoria Zackheim and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thrilling anthology, bestselling mystery writers abandon the cloak of fiction to investigate the suspenseful secrets in their own lives. For many of us, a good, heart-pounding mystery is the perfect escape from real-world confusion and chaos. But what about the writers who create those stories of suspense and intrigue? How do our favorite novelists cope with our perplexing world, and what mysteries keep them up at night? In Private Investigations, twenty fan-favorite mystery writers share first-person tales of mysteries they've encountered at home and in the world. Caroline Leavitt regales us with a medical mystery, recounting a time when she lost her voice and doctors couldn't find a cure, Martin Limón travels back to his military stint in Korea to grapple with the crimes of war, Anne Perry ponders the magical powers of stories conjured from writers' imaginations, and more. Exploring all the tropes of the genre -- from haunted houses and elusive perpetrators to regrouping after missed signals have derailed them -- these writers' true tales show just how much art imitates life, and how, ultimately, we are all private investigators in our own real-world dramas.
Download or read book The Cloud of Unknowing written by William Johnston and published by Image. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING and THE BOOK OF PRIVY COUNSELING are the first explorations in the English language of the soul’s quest for God. Written in Middle English by an unknown fourteenth-century mystic, THE CLOUD OF UNKNOWING expresses with beauty a message that has inspired such great religious thinkers as St. John of the Cross and Teilhard de Chardin, as well as countless others in search of God. Offering a practical guide to the life of contemplation, the author explains that ordinary thoughts and earthly concepts must be buried beneath a “cloud of forgetting,” while our love must rise toward a God hidden in the “cloud of unknowing.” THE BOOK OF PRIVY COUNSELING, also included in this volume, is a short and moving text on the way to enlightenment through a total loss of self and a consciousness only of the divine. William Johnston, an authority on fourteenth-century mysticism and spirituality, provides an accessible discussion of the works, detailing what is known about the history of the texts and their author. In a new foreword, Huston Smith draws on his extensive knowledge of the varieties of religious experience to illuminate the relevance of these works for contemporary readers.
