Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary monograph explores the discursive manifestations of the conflict over how to remember and interpret the actions of the military during the last dictatorship in Uruguay (1973-1985). Through the exploration of the discursive ways in which this powerful group represents past events and participants, we can trace the ideological struggle over how to reconstruct a traumatic past. By looking at memory as a social and discursive practice, the analysis identifies particular semiotic practices and linguistic patterns deployed in the construction of memory. The discursive description of what is remembered, how it is remembered, and who remembers serves to explain how the institution’s construction of the past is transformed and maintained to respond to outside criticism and create an institutional identity as a lawful state apparatus. This book should interest discourse analysts, historians, sociologists and researchers in the field of transitional justice.

Book excerpt: "I REMEMBER... ...humorous, inspirational and nostalgic stories, dating from my early childhood experiences to the present day." YOUNG CHILDREN have hundreds of tales to tell, most of them humorous, with a special blend of love and emotion. I tried to share some of my favorites from these formative years. THE TEENAGERS are so much more secretive in their storytelling. My parents hadn't a clue as to what was going on in my mind during the mid-1940's. Read about how we all share in the triumphs and the disappointments of our teen years. LOVE, MARRIAGE & CHILDREN go hand in hand, along with trying to build a home, literally, for your family. Raising children is a wonderful experience. This portion of the book contains more humor than I anticipated. Most of us can relate to these sentimental anecdotes. OLD AGE brings with it a multitude of problems, but I wouldn't change it for the world. It also brings grandchildren, who light up my life and make each day a joy. I have attempted to write about all the inspiration they have bestowed upon this humble writer. JOIN ME as we go through many of these precious golden moments.

Looking back, it seems almost impossible and definitely inadvisable that some of these happenings did in fact take place, yet they did. I have always felt a strong love for all wildlife. Certainly U know where U stand with them rather than have to guess as with many humans.

Darrell Starks story begins with the first seventeen years of his life, including the hardships that he endured, along with the deep sense of perseverance and overwhelming capacity for love that he learned along the way. The second part of his journey begins when he enlisted in the United States Army and requested duty in the Philippine Islands. He was in the Philippines when World War II began. With her husband's memory of that night gone and the revelation of a potentially life-altering secret, Addison has to reevaluate all she thought she knew. Emilia Cruz is a deputy bearing a heavy burden far beyond the weight of her job. Her husband is no longer the man she married, and Emilia's determined to prevent others from facing the same hardship. When she's called to the scene of an accident pointing to everything she's fighting against, she's determined to see justice for those wronged. Brianne Demanno is hiding from reality. She was thriving as a counselor, but when tragedy struck a beloved client, she lost faith in herself and her purpose. When her neighbors, the Killbourns, are thrown into crisis, Brianne's solitary life is disrupted and she finds herself needed in a way she hasn't been in a while. As the lives of these women intersect, they can no longer dwell in the memory of who they've been. Can they rise from the wreck of the worst moments of their lives to become who they were meant to be?

As I entered a rough relationship that ended with lost of trust, I decided the need to have it published, a need not as an excuse for my actions of getting rid of a sore that’s trying to take my family away. So over the years in its completion, I felt tears, love, and the need to do this story of just how great a large family worked the earth. They had parents and seventeen children to care for, hard but fair. They were taught to use everything they could—fairness, love, and need. Over the time they had before death, we all tried to practice what they preached, and some still do until now. The house is old, and the property changed a bit. I, as owner now of the true homestead, have replaced what I could. Like my dad, I hope my pockets go from pennies to dimes to survive a much harder world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otto Robert Frisch took part in some of the most momentous developments in modern physics, notably the discovery of nuclear fission (a term which he coined). His work on the first atom bomb, which he saw explode in the desert “like the light of a thousand suns”, brought him into contact with figures such as Robert Oppenheimer, Edward Teller, Richard Feynman and the father of electronic computers, John von Neumann. He also encountered the physicists who had made the great discoveries of recent generations: Einstein, Rutherford and Niels Bohr. This characterful book of reminiscences sheds an engagingly personal light on the people and events behind some of the greatest scientific discoveries of this century, illustrated with a series of fascinating photographs and witty sketches by the author himself. “This is a happy book, from which the author's personality and his enjoyment of physics, of music, of life, emerges clearly. It is also a portrait of the pre-War world of physics, of days of small numbers and small apparatus, of times when a physicist could think of an ingenious experiment today and set it up tomorrow.” — Rudolf Peierls, Nature “In writing a charming, light-hearted cameo of his life and times as a scientist, Professor Frisch has revealed more about science than many authors with greater pretensions. This is a book that deserves to be read, and will be enjoyed, by a wide audience.” — The Economist “Despite his modest title, what Frisch ‘manages to remember’ is quite impressive. He loved to tell stories and his many vignettes of his associates... include nearly every outstanding physicist who worked in nuclear physics.” — Science “In the straightforward narrative style he developed writing lay treatments of modern physics, Frisch recounts his memories of significant men and events in the history of physics between 1920 and 1960... Frisch tells his stories well...” — Robert W. Seidel,Isis, A Journal of the History of Science Society

Book excerpt: They were mostly inexperienced campers, "raising their hands" to take a big risk, exchanging their comfortable lives for a difficult week of mountaineering. Over 135 college students and alumni tell stories and share memories of teamwork and testing, disappointment and triumph. They pushed their limits, believed in themselves, and took time for personal reflection. Sometimes pain -- sore muscles, altitude sickness, and frozen toes -- seemed insurmountable. Yet in memory, overcoming physical challenges remains a source of great satisfaction. Persisting when they most want to quit teaches young people to think big. Exhaustion and discomfort can be dispelled by camaraderie and humility. In their futures, finding solutions to tough problems will require truly exceptional leadership. Whether they are called to lead, asked to lead, or forced to lead, all who dared those summits will be better prepared to meet any challenge they will face.
